Words: Mightier Than A Sword (Essay)

MANILA, Philippines - Is the pen really mightier than the sword? Edward Bulwer-Lytto thought so. Pens are used to write words while swords are used as a weapon to apparently hurt people. So, do we still agree that the latter is less powerful than the former? In my case, I do agree. Words do not just hurt people, they also change lives, whether for the better or worse, they have the potential change someone’s life forever.

Words, what are they? And where did they come from? According to the dictionary, a word is a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation that functions as a principal carrier of meaning. Linguists believe that words are universal, that no matter how we had contrarily evolved into another set human beings, we would definitely learn how to use words, but probably in a different manner that they might have cultivated into.  Words are therefore simple. But I think words are more than words. They are very powerful, yet we unconsciously do not realize how robust and controlling they are. Words are the greatest innovation man has ever developed.  They can inspire, influence, destroy and even build whatsoever. They move mountains, travel around the world in as fast as 1 second, and even kill people.  Still don’t agree?

There have been a lot of instances that people changed the world because of words. Whether written or spoken, they just mean a lot. A lot of wars were started by an exchange of words. A lot of friendships were destroyed by words. A lot of lovers were separated by words. Whether we like it or not, words will always be a factor, if not the main reason, that destroys good relationships. But are words really that bad? Not really. Words give us hope, life and inspiration. Let’s use Japan as an example, when tsunami struck this East Asian nation, people used words to express their thoughts. They used them to tell stories of heroism and courage. They used them to tell words of wisdom. And more importantly, without words, we can never have that chance to help and save lives.

In my 21 years of existence in this world, I must say words have never been my best friend. In other words, I am having a hard time using them. They sometimes agree with me, and most of the time, they betray me. It is always hard to find the perfect words that I really want to express. It’s so frustrating. I always have that “it’s on the tip of my tongue” moment. A single word can make a big difference and once we said them, we can never get them back.

I remember a point in my life when I had the chance to be part of the top section in our elementary school. I was a third grader. I was in the second section but I was doing great. In fact, I was doing so great that the school supervisor even heard about my performance, so one day, she visited me. It was the middle of the school year; I saw her talking with my adviser when they called me up. Then she said the magic words, “Do you want to be transferred to the first section?” It was too fast that I didn’t even have the chance to breathe. The pressure was on me. They were waiting for my answer. My head shouted “Of course! I want to be in Section 1.” But my mouth betrayed me and said, “No, Ma’am.” That very instant changed my life. From that moment on, they never put me in the first section even though I was the top pupil in Section 2 class. If I had said “Yes” that day, I could have had exclusive teaching advantage in school. I could have been the Valedictorian, well not really, but at least I would have gotten higher grades.

My story is a good example of how powerful a single word can be. Once executed, we can never take them back. It’s either they pick up us, or pull us down. The words we speak or write have a different upshot on the individuals they get to. And from there, everything can change permanently.

A mother and daughter I know were fighting over the daughter’s freedom on having a boyfriend. The mother didn’t want her to have a boyfriend.  She was only 17 but she said the boy loved him and he would do everything to prove that his love was true. The mom explained all the possible things that could happen to her if she insisted on having a boyfriend. She could get low grades, she could be hurt emotionally, and worst, she could get pregnant. The mom told her all the finest quotes she knew. But she never listened to her. One day, she got home pregnant and the bad news was the boy’s nowhere to be found. She was so scared. She was so depressed. She should have known better. Then she remembered her mom and all the words of wisdom she had told her. If only she had listened, she thought. If only she had felt all the words her mom said in her skin, this wouldn’t have happened. If only she didn’t let those words pass through her left ear to the right. She regretted everything. When she was about to abort her baby, alone and depressed, she talked to her mom. She couldn’t find the perfect words to tell her mom, all she said was, “I am so sorry.” And her mom understood. The simple words made any gap reachable. The wounds were somehow healed.  If she didn’t say anything at all, would there be a difference? Yes. The baby must have been aborted and gone for good.

“Speak only kind words towards others” says the bible in Col.4:6. Words can build friendships between enemies. Words can stop an atrocious war. They build bridges. They make love, peace and happiness. Words, if used properly, can do the impossible. Words are communication and communication is words.

I agree that words can also be used as a tool to harm others. People can use words to manipulate other people. Let’s use criminals as an example. Why are there drug syndicate all over the world? It all started with one simple thing: negotiation. All these criminals negotiate using words. They recruit people using words. They sell what needs to be sold using words. They hurt or kill people using words. Their successes and failures materialize because of words. The sad truth is that words can damage another person far deeper than any weapon can do. Words can make lives terrible.

Lying is another way words affect humans. Lying, as we know it, is never good. It has never been. Even God himself cannot lie. It is also a proof that words can be unreliable. We can never prove that the words spoken unto you are real. We all lie. People say that we lie every day and the one we say the most is “I am fine.” What if we never lie? What if we say, “I am not fine because you are talking to me and isn’t it obvious that I don’t want to talk with you?” Would there be a difference? So that’s another story. The power of words, whether factual or fabricated, is always there to keep the world moving.

Jokes are as bad as lies. Have you heard about this young guy who committed suicide because his friends joked that his girlfriend broke up with him. It’s tragic. Words killed him but no words could ever take his life back. This is another example of how words can keep one's world moving or have one’s world stop. We can never escape them. The very thing that comes out of our mouths can come back to us. Words that we say make us who we are. So, it’s better to keep our words sweet as we might eat them all up later.

An insensitive person is no different compared to a shy one. Words are free to be used. It’s like an open-source application. Everyone can use it, but be responsible when doing so. We can someday take a dose of our own medicines. Even those who cannot speak, see or hear can use words to express what they feel. But it’s just sad that some people use words to express what they don’t truthfully feel. Rather, they use them to be whatever they know they cannot be.

Words are indeed powerful.  Words may be powerful enough to make your life miserable or extravagant; they do not always affect you the way other people are affected. But whether good or bad we should always know how to use them properly. Let’s think about the words we’ve said lately, would there be changes if we didn’t say them or if we only said the perfect words? If yes, that’s a good start for us. Otherwise, let’s attempt to reflect again and be more careful. Let’s choose the words we say because no matter how we come up with whatsoever, our words will always speak for us. Our spoken words, like some restless souls, will haunt us as long as we live, so we better think before we speak.

Collection Idea: Tomica

MANILA, Philippines - The only thing I collect is Tomica (aside from downloaded pirated games. ) Tomica is not Tom and Mica dolls (if ever they exist and if that makes sense.) It is a brand of toy cars--diecast metal cars--from Japan that feature real life cars.  From Honda Civic to Mitsubishi Lancer, name any Japanese car and they got it. So far, I have 24 in total. I started collecting once a month last year but hasn't purchased any for months now. I removed it on my priority list because I have got lots of bills to pay: cable, internet, mobile phone (credit card), and phone line.. Oh crap. That's too much for a working student like me. A normal Tomica isn't expensive, though. It is PHP169.95 (USD 4.18) a piece while the limited edition can be as much as PHP350.00 (USD 8.60) a piece.

I won't be showing you all my cars, but let me feature some of the ones I really love.

Here is Hummer H2. It is my Collection No. 005-111015. Scale 1/67. The good thing about this is that it is really huge! I mean, it is still small but compared to the others, it so fat ass! And that's what I love about it. It's ready to kill!
Hummer H2 posing for the camera.
This is a rare find.  Collection No. 006-111127. Scale 1/64. I had not much money when I saw this in a mall and that was the only time I actually saw one. So I grabbed the opportunity! If only I could ride it home, that would be an appreciation.
Jeep Wrangler is really awesome!

This is the most expensive one I have. It has rubberized wheels. Collection No. 012-120107. It is actually a gift from a classmate. The car is well made and is limited edition. Every bit of it is in great detail! I hope many people would buy me one as gifts.. blogger gift perhaps?

And oh by the way, I took and edited the pictures myself, so I hope you won't share it without any credit or such.. To all guys, girls, dads or humans out there who collect Tomicas. Let me know! I would be happy to feature you in this blog!

And just to inform you guys, Tomicas are usually available in Toy Kingdom, Toys R Us and any other Toy Stores. They are cheap, unique and definitely a collector's wishlist.

Don't Like Korean Food?

SEOUL, South Korea - The Korean wave is coming! Oh.. It's here already? Oh this is awkward.. Well.. I am sure you like the Korean culture just like everybody else, right? You then try to blend your lifestyle with the Korean ways!

Korean fashion: CHECK! Colorful shirt, colorful pants, colorful shoes. Check check check! Korean clothes? You bet! You look prettier than Song Hye Gyo and more handsome than Goo Jun Pyo.

Korean songs: CHECK! You don't understand it but you sing it. You memorized it better than your own National anthemn. You can be awarded the Korean singer award for foreigners.

Korean language: CHECK! "Annyeong haseyo!" you would say to your mom.. You do not even need subtitles watching their movies! Admit it! Kkkkkk

Korean food: CHECK............mate? Admit it. Korean food, the first time you smelled or tasted it, can make you go---blearghh!

Took this picture in a Korean restaurant in Ortigas.
What makes people go gaga then? Me, myself, and I didn't like Korean food. It smelled too strong for my nose to handle. Too spicy for my tongue to taste. And too juicy for my mouth to hold. Bleargh.. What a moment!

But don't cry little Korean-wannabe.. It WAS like that. And now? Oh lo.. Korean food is heaven in my mouth.. It's like buffet after 10 years in an island of coco crunch. So what the heck happened?!

Korean food is not like those chips you buy anywhere. You like it. You are fooled by it's physical appearance and then "crunch!," you get what you see.. and that is all about it. Korean food is more like the opposite, the more you get used to it, the more it tastes better. The more you let it melt on tongue (whatever is melt-able), the more you taste its liveliness.

So my point is.. Don't give up just yet. I AM A FAN of Korean food. From bulgogi to kimchi, I am so amazed by how it allows me to gobble vegetables like meat. I don't eat veggies often. But Korean veggies are the exception. The spices, the tenderness, the juiciness--all in the Korean food.

Korean cuisine is indeed one of the most delicious in the world--at par with Nutella.

Things To Do If You Can't Sleep (+Facts)

MANILA, Philippines - YOU CANNOT SLEEP! Aha.. I knew it.. Sleeping is an essential part of survival. Without it you will end up dead.. Seriously. Before I list down the things I think that can help you sleep, why don't we learn more about it?

Here are some facts* you probably didn't know:
  1. The average adult needs a total sleep time of 7 to 9 hours per day - it is not true that older people need less sleep however over 50% of people over 64 years old suffer from some type of sleep disorder.
  2. Brains are more active sleeping than watching TV
  3. Sleeping for over 9 hours per night (for an adult) is just as bad as sleeping 6 hours or less.
  4. Dreaming that you are taking a nap, suggests that you need to take a little time off to relax and take it easy.
  5. The body language of sleep positions reflect your personality traits!
Amazing innit? Nothing now. Just sharing. We all don't care about the facts, right?

There are two things why you ended up here. One, you want to do something TO FALL asleep. Two, you wanna do something TO HAVE FUN while you cannot sleep. Let me just tell you that I am no doctor. These things I am about to write may help you sleep, or may help you stay awake at all. Either way, read the title: THINGS TO DO.  So, try at your own risk!
1. Write a blog

Just like what I am doing right now. Did you know that it is 5:19AM right now?! Although, I am not a writer or an specialist in a specific field, I can still feel the need of writing. O ha. Writing is not a talent nor a proof of your intelligence. As long as you have thoughts to express (sorry Patrick and Spongebob) and fingers to use for typing (sorry again, Patrick) then you are as good as everyone else. Topics you say? Why not write about your life, like a diary..Dear Diary, my brother ate my apple pie and I cant get over! Or write a blog about your hobby--collecting candy wrappers! Or why not write random letters--khfkahgkhgkrhgsi--wishing someone might decode them! It is all yours, captain!

2. Play computer games

You don't have to have a PS3 or an XBOX to do this. All you need is your phone or you computer and you are good to go. Playing video games can make your brain healthier--but not too much, ok? Play something that you can relate to. Love cooking? Play Fruit Ninja! Love The Walking Dead? Play Plants VS. Zombies or the official Walking Dead game available for your computer. See? There are many things to do! Don't end up playing with yourself though. Because you don't know the outCOME may be.

3.  Listen to music

What kind of music do you like? Rock? Ballad? Kpop? Go ahead and play it! Music can help you fall asleep! And it's a good way to be happy. But don't stop there. Try to search more info about the artist, the lyrics and the music videos of the particular song you are listening to. You will be surprised to see tons of things behind that music! Sing with me now "Baby, baby, baby ohhhh..."

4. Design something

Yes. Something! Why not try to design a building. Or a new shirt for your school or organization? Or probably a car or a boat or a new Titanic. Na.. You don't have to be an artist, Little Picasso-wannabe! Just use your imagination. Imagine. I-ma-gine. Try it now!

5. Go out and grab some snacks

Walk to the nearest 7/11 or Ministop and get some snacks! Walking makes you fit but eating can make you fat but who cares? Who loves to munch that chips when nobody is there to ask for some?! Isn't it okay to be greedy sometimes? Go on. I will be waiting here. I know how much you want to eat that Lays or to drink that Cocacola. Fill that hungry tummy baby! Just be safe though, bring your dog with you or your cats, if she may be helpful.

And that's it! Hopefully you learned something today, kids!

Still can't sleep? Why not do all these things all at the same time. Ha!

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Buy iPhone 5

MANILA, Philippines - I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy S3 and I never owned an iPhone--but--but--but it doesn't mean I cannot review one. I had an iPod  touch 4G long time ago, and seeing the specs of new iPhone isn't 10 levels higher of the iPod.  I have the right to review one! I know many people would defend iPhone for the reason that it is iPhone. It is a brand that we all know and love--err--love to have and brag!

I have 5 (maybe) VALID reasons as to why you should choose the Samsung Galaxy S3 or any other phones over an iPhone.

1.  iPhone 5 looks awful

Isn't it so long and thin? It's like the already-in-peace Nokia 5110 just flatter? Just kidding. Seeing it just taller makes me laugh at the design. LG did it once with one of their chocolate phones, and it was awful to look at. Maybe we will still get used to it in the future, though--most especially when the next iPhone 10 comes in the scene--a 12-inch long iPhone with (hopefully) bluetooth file transfer support this time.

Big momma would love this vibrating iPhone for sure!

2. Apple has no Steve Jobs no more

Since the guy's gone, I've never felt anything "wowable" about the products they release anymore. The wow factor has become the "oh, I see" or some bloggers would say "oh, that's it." I am not saying Apple is Steve Jobs but Steve Jobs is indeed Apple. He helped and presented the iPhones well, we were all amazed! But now the old man's gone, and we don't see anything that has changed a lot since . iPhone 5 is a clear example-why upgrade if iPhone 4s is so similar.

Gudjonsson 2011 (c)

3. iPhone maps is a killer

Seriously? From Google Maps to beta maps? This is one of the biggest disappointment of all time probably second to Lance Armstrong doping. Apple is removing all of the best of Google's to make iPhone truly their own, which I find so wrong and greedy. Google has helped so many people see their house from above without using a helicopter, and removing that with a very awful application sure is a big mistake. I wonder how many cars were installed an underwater system just because of the awful iPhone maps.

For real? An underwater bridge?

4. iPhone is over-priced

iPhone is expensive. You cannot argue about that. Apple IS expensive. The S3 was about PHP30,000 on it's first day of release, the iPhone is around 30k, too. But why I think overpriced you say? Did you read 1-3 of this post? Maybe you have the idea now, that Apple shouldn't be of that price at all.

This one sure is expensive!
5. iPhone 5 loses to Samsung Galaxy S3

Specs wise-yes! We ain't looking at the individual specs no more. And "technically," Samsung S3 wins, no doubt. Samsung S3 can have all the features iPhone 5 has--Facetime, Maps (which is dangerous), hmm.. what else? Time's up! Moving on, iPhone cannot have the features S3 offers--instant file transfer, video playing while you do something else, smart movement detection features and BLUETOOTH file transfer.

Them phones we all cannot have.

Ok, to sum it up.. I am clearly hating iPhone 5 by looking at some of its weak spots. Don't you worry guys. I will try to get hold of an iPhone one day and try to appreciate the beauty of it. But not now.. Not now.

But here is a more detailed video review of the top phones.

Which phone do you prefer, though?
