How Technology Gives Human the Edge (Essay)

MANILA, Philippines - In the era of technological advancements and the progression of science, an argument has come into view regarding the effect of technology to humanity and individualism. Many environmentalists and pro humans protested about the devastating effects that technology has caused the environment and humanity. They put the blame on such advancements. Humanity and individualism aren't sacrifice in this age of technology; in fact, technology has helped to develop a better world for individuals.

The world has come to the age of the future. The building blocks of tomorrow that once we called impossible are just a few steps away to obtain. The world we live in today is unimaginable without technology. Can somebody survive without the internet? Yes, maybe. But it is now part of our lives. The basic necessities to survive aren't limited to just food, clothes and shelter. The Internet or whatever technologically influenced materials we have around are becoming part of us whether we like it or not. And they help us grow up to live within the range of the today’s standard of living. The world is not going to move without technology. A machine is technology. And machines surround us. From the bag zippers to our cars, a machine is right there! Technology is right there! Technology feeds our dreams with fulfillment and success. Technology is undeniable! It is here and it’s here to live on.

The world depends on technology to keep going. Life as we know it depends on technology to survive. The current state of the world is no doubt a technology-dependent biosphere. The government today is very eager to establish a broadband network that can link government agencies in a rush. The world has adapted into this kind of trend. Having the fastest internet in the world, Korea is a wired country. Everything here is fast, internet-ready and convenient. This country proves that taking advantage of technology has proven to be a successful tactic in becoming progressive and wealthy. And the trend, if that’s what we call it, scattered worldwide in a speed as comparable to that of light. The world, the countries, and the people: all depends on technology.

Humans are created in a way that they can easily adapt to their environment. A proof is when people go out of the country to a place colder than theirs, wait a few months later, it seems like they feel hotter than ever in this colder place. You see, it is human nature to evolve, not as the way Charles Darwin had defined it though. Humans are naturally talented and curious. They tinker electronic gadgets, they invent futuristic machines, name it, the humans tried it!

Social networking is becoming very popular to humans. It has grown from zero to fully loaded. This is the result of humans’ eagerness to connect. Humans love to talk. Can you blame them for abusing telephones? Can you blame them for misusing keyboards? Can you blame them for overusing cell phones? The ability to use words is a good enough reason to accept the fact that humans are created to connect with one another. After all, even animals have their own ways to communicate, no one’s exempted. It is natural for human to use all the resources it can acquire to their full potential. It is human nature to adapt, response and change to everything that can go wrong or right.

Technology involves the use of the environment to meet human needs. The growth and expansion of several technologies within the last thousands of years of human history has been affected by the surroundings, civilizations, and science. And how did we end up having such advancements that we enjoy today? Most of us have seen a lot of summary of the evolution of technology with lengthy and tedious articles that keep us busy reading for a while before we actually see the timeline unfold before our eyes. So to make the long history of the evolution of digital age short, let’s make it simple and direct to the point. In 2400 BC, the abacus was invented in Babylonia. People these days depended on a very simple calculator which can take a couple of minutes to figure out. Even though this is a sign of a good technology, it is nothing compared to a button-cell powered calculator we have today. In 724, Liang Ling-Can invented the first fully mechanical clock. In 1609, the microscope was invented by Galileo Galilee. A technology we all should thank for. Here comes the year 1769 when steam engine was invented by James Watt. In 1816 the stethoscope was invented by Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec. 1946, the microwave oven was invented by Percy Spencer. And most notably Tim Berners-Lee invered the World Wide Web in 1990. What’s the point of telling this? It’s simple. What we see is what we get. Without these inventions, how will the world be? Do you mind living in a cave without any laptop by your side? No thanks.

Now that we have proved the effectiveness and benefits of technology in our lives, the real argument of this essay starts here. Are humanity and individualism sacrificed in the age of technology? No, they are not. The only thing we can say that are sacrificed in this digital age is nature, and I meant it to be literally the environment, the animals and the sea. People (or I must say those who are anti-technology who somehow depended from technology to survive) believed that technology is a bully which eats up the true implication of being a human. I have heard a couple of times that the internet, for example, has affected students in many ways that their social being is sacrificed. I believe that growing up in a digital world facilitates emerging thinking and intelligence. We may have heard widespread accounts and notions about how youngsters are becoming attached to the computers; becoming addicted to the internet; losing their attention span; and increasingly anxious, self-centered, and even harsh through internet interaction. While there is much that remains to be learned, and while there are substantial matters yet to be fixed, overall it would appear that the conventional understanding we are all fed upon is incorrect. Digital children are effectively learning the social skills which are necessary for an effective interaction in the digital economy. So this just proves that individualism and humanity are never sacrificed. After all, they are actually those who are benefiting in the emerging digital world.

A very basic example would be Facebook. It is an argument that Facebook does no good to anyone. The social networking site has been condemned for being a source of privacy obliteration that can also turn internet users into real social networking addicts. Pestering persons, hacking into accounts, getting too much involved with unidentified users and being deprived from the real world are some of the largely recognized undesirable effects of Facebook.

Additionally, many people believe that social networking sites cannot substitute real relationships. People don’t really connect with people online as they connect with real people whom they can feel and touch. However, if you think back, there have been times that real people were not available in times of others’ need, while online people were there and supported them; there has been a communication that made a big difference.

Should we blame the digital age for all these goings-on? Think again. Here’s a part of the article “The Benefits of Facebook "Friends:" Social Capital and College Students' Use of Online Social Network Sites” by Nicole B. Ellison, Charles Steinfield and Cliff Lampe of the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media, Michigan State University “Recently, researchers have emphasized the importance of Internet-based linkages for the formation of weak ties, which serve as the foundation of bridging social capital. Because online relationships may be supported by technologies like distribution lists, photo directories, and search capabilities (Resnick, 2001), it is possible that new forms of social capital and relationship building will occur in online social network sites. Bridging social capital might be augmented by such sites, which support loose social ties, allowing users to create and maintain larger, diffuse networks of relationships from which they could potentially draw resources (Donath & boyd, 2004; Resnick, 2001; Wellman et al., 2001). Donath and boyd (2004) hypothesize that SNSs could greatly increase the weak ties one could form and maintain, because the technology is well-suited to maintaining such ties cheaply and easily.” The passage only proves that any weak ties we have with the world are bridged because of the social networking. That is why it call “social networking”, people create network in the internet that has something to do with society they are linked in.

Not everything is wrong about social networking or Facebook in particular. In a lot of cases, people find important information, catch up with old acquaintances, promote work and business, support important causes and get together with people who can be true friends in the process. What’s wrong with Facebook is the people’s habitual action that turns into addiction and violently deprives them from reality. This issue is personal and has got nothing to do with the digital age! As a matter of fact, the positive output of social networking has contributed a lot to humanity and individualism.

Another example I will give you is the effects of the video games. Video games have emerged in a rapid rate in the early 90’s that people lives were diverted into the digital world in an instant. These games that replaced the traditional ones we had at home were looked down upon by parents as time-wasters. The worse thing is that parents think that these games rot the brain. Also, brutal video games are blamed by the experts as the reason why some youth become aggressive and violent or commit extreme anti-social behavior But games are bad only if we spend our time just playing them. And we cannot blame such instances to the device itself but the human nature itself. Whether it is video gaming or not, like card games which have nothing to do with the technology, too much is bad.

Many researchers have learned that games have important educational value. They concluded that simulation and adventure games, where players make societies or construct their own houses, developed children's strategic view and developmental skills. These games are the most popular among teenagers. Players who frequently engage in video games showed some improvement in mathematics, reading and spelling. The analysis into the habits of children also revealed that playing games is far from a solitary activity. In fact, children preferred to play games in groups rather than by themselves.

The digital age is a proof of human’s wonderful minds. Individualism and humanity have been benefiting in so many ways that it is considered non-sense to say that they are not being prioritized. What we need in the future are more powerful technological advancements that can help people understand technology. Technology doesn't bring us apart, it brings us close together. So, it is a must for humans to understand the consequences of their actions. We need a better world, where humans working together in harmony, and technology making life so much easier, so we can spend more time with our loved ones.

So, are humanity and individualism really sacrificed in this age of technology? Think again.

Mga Katotohanan Tungkol Sa Pag-ibig (at Mga Pagong)

MAYNILA, Pilipinas - Masaya ka bang naimbento pa 'yang letcheng pag-ibig na yan? Hati lang naman ang sagot ng tao e. Oo, kasi inlab ka. Hindi, kasi bigo ka. Well, well.. Hindi ako eksperto sa pag-ibig mga tsong at tsang. Pero inalam ko ang mga katotohanan at kasinungalingan pagdating sa pag-ibig. Simulan na natin!

My MATH  exam answer during desperate times! My professor actually agreed.

"Hindi kailanman naging mali ang magmahal.."

FALSE

Love is blind, ika nga. So, this is the flaw: since you are blinded by the situation, edi you won't see how wrong it is! Tapos right after mo marealize na mali ito, you will then conclude na minsan may mali rin sa pagmamahal. I guess the main point of the thought is: hindi siya mali sa mata ng nagmamahal sa panahon mismo na nagmamahal siya. Pwede? Pwede. Kaso may "kailanman" e, and that ruins it! At magmahal ng ano? Pwedeng pera, yosi or alak. It depends, dude!

"Masakit ang magmahal.."

TRUE

Kahit gaano ka pa kasaya sa iniibig mo ngayon, there will be a point in time na masasaktan ka dahil sa kanya. And that is a fact. It just happens eh, so let's deal with it na lang. It is unavoidable part of human nature. Kaakibat na ng pagmamahal ang sakit na 'yan. Pero kahit gaano pa kasakit yan, kung mahal mo talaga yan, you can manage. Yan ang tinatawag na bangis ng pagmamahal.

"Ayaw sa iyo ng gusto mo.."

TRUE

..most of the time.. Humans are picky creatures! Pataas ng pataas ang standard ng tao base sa anong meron sa environment niya. Pansinin mo. Bakit ang pangit pangit pala ng crush mo nung elementary pero gandang-ganda (or gwapong-gwapo) ka na sa kanya noon? Kasi, yung crush mo stands out among the people around you. The person is special. Eh, ngayong naghigh school ka, mas nagdalaga or nagbinata ka na.. Everything changes and so is your crush! The main point ko rito is since we are picky, we tend to choose the best among the rest. So, kaya ka ayaw ng crush mo ay dahil hindi ka niya type, and no matter how much you try: may instance talagang wala ka ng magagawa dun. At tanong ko sayo, isipin mo ung isang taong type na type ka pero ayaw mo? Subukan mo ngang mahalin. Cannot be, diba? It also applies to your crush's choice. Kaya 'wag ka nang masiadong malungkot. Karma lang 'yan! Why not love everyone? Para ebrebadi hapi! :D

"Malungkot maging single.."

TRALSE

True: kasi walang sex? Biro lang. Malungkot kasi you live life alone. You have friends, family and your pet tiger pero iba pa rin ang merong kasintahan. Your soul is open to the other half of you--the lover. Whatever you can do, can't do, will do, won't do--alam niya and naiintindihan niya. And isn't it great to be with someone? Think of it.

and

False: kasi may kamay ka naman? Biro lang. Masaya rin kahit papaano. For guys, walang gastos masiyado.. mabibili mo na yang FHM magazine na yan. For girls, wala ng magpapaiyak sayo na scumbag na nilalang. The good thing about being single is that it's a good way to know yourself completely. You don't know yourself unless you take time to understand yourself. Kung never ka nabakante, you always tend to be dependent to someone--your other half. Pero people come and go, katotohanan yan. They will die e. So, ang akin lang.. being single once in a while is a good way to learn how to be really independent. At isa pa, ang mga single malungkot lang kapag Valentine's day, tama? Everyday is single's day, ika nga.

"Lahat ng love song e patama sa'yo"

TRUE

Kapag inlove ka, seems like lahat ng lyrics ng kanta e naaapply mo sa buhay pagibig mo. And imagine, you focus on the lyrics kapag inlove ka! Pero kapag single ka (like forever alone,) you focus sa tune lang, diba? At lastly, kapag brokenhearted ka, all love songs are heartbreaking for you kasi kapag positive yung meaning nung love song--you remember the sweet memories you've had, while the sad love songs remind you of your current situation. How freaking sad diba! Buti pa 'yung Crazy Frog, walang lyrics!

"Langit siya, lupa ako.. Hindi kami magkakatuluyan.."

FALSE

This is a complete bullshit. Never naging hadlang ang katayuan mo sa buhay, ang itsura at ang kayamanan sa pag-ibig. Well, sa umpisa, marahil. But there are actually success stories na rich-poor, ugly-pretty and boss-maid. Kahit gaano pa kalayo sa tingin mo ang sarili mo sa taong gusto mo, there is no point of giving up! I mean, unless artista yun at hindi mo naman nakakausap, patay tayo diyan. Pero kung kaibigan mo na siya or you sometimes talk or there is at least a reoccurring contact with the person, there is always a chance.. Ayee.. Nagsmile siya. Biro lang. Asa ka pa! HAHAHA!

"Once a cheater always a cheater.."

TRUE?

I never cheated so I don't know. :D Kidding aside, base sa aking mga nakausap, it is actually true, once na nagcheat ang isang tao (in any forms you may call it) there will always be a point in his/her life na magcheacheat siya ulit sayo (although it could not be as bad as he/she did before, there will be a point na ganun.. could be a little bit of flirting with a coworker or sexting with an ex or cheating sa pagiisip niya.) But don't you worry! I am not saying it is a fact.. It's just happens whether you like it or not. Ikaw mismo. You will see what I am talking about.. when you meet people who cheated once.

"Cheated once? You mean, cheating?" - Albert Einstein, in a parallel universe.

AND FINALLY.. like what I have told you..

Cute diba! They are making a baby of their own.

Hope you learned something.. For disputes, go to your mom! Or create you own blog! :) Opinyon ko lang naman yan e. Peace na tayo!

Teka, do you have love problems? Believe it or not, I can answer that! Comment below and I will feature it on my next post about lalalalalalove..

Social Networking: Destruction/Distraction To Students

PASIG CITY, Philippines - I remember writing this in 2009 for my Korean student who was 2nd year high school in Colegio San Agustin Makati. Yeah, I did his homework. I had to make it look like his, though. :)

© Okrest | Stock Free Images and Dreamstime Stock Photos
Here is the short article:

Technology changes rapidly. From the old-fashioned snail mails to the new and fast 3G video calls. Indeed, everyone is qualified to be called a geek. The computer savvy people come from all ages, from your neighbor’s youngest cousin to your grandmother. But most computer users are proven to be us—the youth (students). How do social networking sites affect the way students study?

Today, Friendster has more than 13 million active members in the Philippines. Friendster is also the country’s #1 social networking site. In Korea, people don’t really have Friendster or Facebook, because almost 25% percent of the South Korean population has Cyworld. And just like any other countries in the world, students are among the top users. In America, researchers surveyed 219 students at Ohio State, including 102 undergraduate students and 117 graduate students. Of the participants, 148 said they had a Facebook account.

An Indian student was killed because of posting a little something about him in a social network that is popular in India. This is perhaps an extreme example of the social impact of these social networking websites such as Facebook, Myspace and Friendster on today’s youth. So instead of asking a new friend his home address, we rather ask his Friendster’s URL or if he’s on Facebook.

Students’ attention is separated by two worlds – the real and the virtual. The real world is all about submitting projects, doing homework, passing tests and so on. While the virtual world is about giving friend requests, approving new comments, sharing photos and everything that is digitally connected. But which world is better? Which is much more fun to focus on?

Forgetting that they have Science test tomorrow, students chatted through Facebook’s walls. Their grades were affected and going down period by period. Because social networking sites are highly addictive, high school students who use Facebook spend less time studying and have lower grade point averages than students who have not signed up for the social networking website. This is according to a study conducted in the States.

The effects on students are really getting destructive on some points. They are addicted to the extent that their performance in the real world is negatively affected. The technology changes so fast, and so as the students’ future.

What can be the solution? How can we prevent students from being addicted? Should we really prevent them? Like locking personal computers up? Blocking networking sites to be accessed by any student? No matter how we try to stop them from accessing these sites, they would just keep on trying to log in. So, what should we do?

Keeping students away from computers isn’t a good solution. But bringing education attached to these sites is one of best ones.

A good way to start is by adding simple challenges to solve every time we click anything in a social networking site. If we want to approve a pending friend request, we must solve a simple Math question like 200-45= ? and if we get that right, we can approve the request right away. Instead of those Farmville, Restaurant City and Pet Society games that we play on Facebook, why don’t they replace them with Texttwist, hangman, Scrabble and other educational games?

Students may spend less time studying because they rather go on social networking sites. It’s hard to change this, and we couldn’t stop big sites from operating just because we want them to. So the best way to prevent destruction is not by killing them but by taming them, rather changing them into better sites.

Things You Don't Know About Call Center Agents

MANILA, Philippines - Customer service is one of the conveniences customers take for granted, most especially because it is, most of the time, free and easily accessible. I have been in the business for a few months now, and there are things I just learned and noticed about it. Here are the things customers DO NOT know (or probably, don't take much of consideration) about the customer service representative they are talking to.
Customer Representatives Have Feelings, Too.

Of course you do know about it, don't you? I know how frustrated you are about the product or the service, but little did you know that shouting or cursing at the representative won't help you at all! If you want to be respected, you treat others with respect, too. Right? Most people who call the center start the call irate and end it irate.

"Hey, why the f**k is my phone not working?! You idiot. I hate your product! I am not using it again! F** You!"

Do you think that will help you? Seriously.

Think about it? Imagine those words being said to you when it is actually your first time talking to each other. Difficult right? Some agents actually absorb what you say, most especially if you said something about their race or accent. So the next time you speak with a representative, never ever say bad words, because these people are there to assist you and not to make fun of you.

It's Not Always The Agent's Fault If You Are Having A Problem

..It's probably the system or the company itself. Little did you know that most of the agents you are speaking with are not hired directly by the company which provides the product/service you just purchased. That is why they are called "call center agents", because the company, let's say Apricot Computers, paid Chuck Norris Customer Services, a call center company, to provide them the customer service they need. See that? But it doesn't mean they don't know anything about the products! These agents are trained for weeks just to be an specialist about the products or services! They probably know more about the products than the CEOs themselves! Trust
 me!

So, if ever there is a problem with the product or the company in general, never put the blame on the agent. Although he or she is the only person available to represent the company, he/she is not responsible for your mistakes and that of the company's. Calm down now, and talk with them as though you are speaking with your relatives.

The Representative Doesn't Have All Day To Speak With You

Did you know that agents need to resolve the issue in the fastest possible time? The shorter the call will be, the better. But it doesn't mean you need to be rushed. It's just that there are instances that people would place the agents on hold or let them wait while the customers do their thing.

Example, "Hey , I need to set up my computer first so I can see if you have really reset my online account.. Hold on.. Ok. It's restarting now.. Just a moment.. Ok.. Hmmm.. How do I turn it on again?"

Hey, hey, hey. STOP.

Do not do that because it is so unprofessional. I mean, unless you are calling regarding your broken computer, then there is no problem, but doing something to prove if the agent has really done it is not a great idea--plus putting him or her on hold is the worst thing that you can do. If he/she said it, trust the person. You are ruining the respect they are giving you.

All Your Concerns Are Notated On Your Account

But don't expect the agent to know everything immediately. One thing that you should not do is to lie. Lying is a no no while speaking with a representative because they can see everything on the system. If they asked you something (which you have already answered before or if it wasn't the first time you have talked about it), it doesn't mean they don't know anything about it or they would like to know about it,  it's actually just they are just verifying the information you have previously given.

Friendly Customers Are More Likely To Be Assisted Well

It's not about the customer's mood of course, but if you sound friendly, the agent will like you and, more likely, your problems will be resolved immediately. There is no point of pressuring the agent to do what you want because just because the customer is always right doesn't mean it's true.

"Give me my f***ng password!" says one customer. It is usually not allowed to give out such information to the customer (for security purposes.) But instead of the agent telling you how to reset the password, you continue with "I AM THE ACCOUNT OWNER! LET ME SPEAK WITH THE SUPERVISOR! ANYONE HIGHER THAN YOU!" which didn't resolve the issue at all!

No.

Try this:

"Hello ! I am having a problem with my password, seems like I forgot it, is there a way you can get it for me?" although the agent will not give it to you, you might hear: "I will be more than happy to assist you, let me inform you that I cannot give out any account related information to you for security purposes, but let me guide you in resetting it online.."

See.

Customer Representative Must Not Lie

Have you forgotten that the calls are recorded? And so that you know, the calls are actually audited for quality purposes. Once an agent lie to you, he/she might be fired. So trust an agent when he/she says "I am not lying, Ma'm/Sir." believe him/her.

Speaking With The Supervisor Will Not Help At All

If you want to speak with the supervisor, make sure that it is about a commendation or complaint regarding the agent. Don't ask for one just because the system cannot do it for you or because the agent says it's not possible. The companies have policies remember, just because you want it, doesn't mean you can get it through the supervisor.

"I need my credit card number because I left my card at my mom's home and I am paying for my bill now." says the customer. Usually, in this scenario, it is not allowed even if you are the cardholder. The agent then goes "I would like to help you out regarding that but I would like to inform you that we don't have access to such information (which is true) and may not be able to give it to you. But if you want to pay for something, you may try our online bill payment system. All you need to do is....."

The customer then goes, "NO! I have no time! I have no computer! Give me the manager because I have no time to speak with you all. You are not helping me!"

Gee. That escalated quickly! The agent will then tell you that "Let me just inform you that the supervisor will not be able to give the card number as well and will just tell you the same thing."

"I don't care! I want to hear it directly from him!"

Seriously?!

If the agent says no, it doesn't mean he or she is avoiding you to be transferred just because he or she is afraid that you might report him or her. The reason why you are being deescalated is because it is just a waste of time on your part and their part. So, be patient and trust the agent. Remember, the calls are recorded and you will not be misinformed as much as possible!

The Agents Do Not Place You On Hold Before You Speak To Them

"You placed me on hold for 45 minutes just to speak with you!" Errr.. Did you know that when you call, you are immediately connected to the "most" available agent? The longest waiting call will be connected to the first agent who becomes available.

Example:

Caller A: waiting for 10 minutes.
Caller B: waiting for 14 minutes.

Agent A: the call will end in 5 minutes.
Agent B: the call will end in 3 minutes.

Agent B will be connected to Caller B! It's a first come first serve basis!

There you go! There are actually more to say, but here are just the essentials! Just make sure the next time you call the customer service that if you want to be treated with respect, respect the other person, too! But of course, no matter how disrespectful you are, you must/will still be respected by agent.

How about you? What are the instances that you've had problems with the agent himself/herself?

Work or Study? Choose School.

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - Working while studying is not the best idea ever. If I were to choose one, I'd rather study... no.. I'd rather work.. Hmm.. Ok.. I'd rather do none of them.. I want to be the world's most famous bum.

How does it feel like to work and study?

It feels awesome (and tiring.) Awesome in the sense that you have two worlds to manage. School papers to finish and a job to master. But it is tiring. It's difficult. If you were in a situation that you were to choose one, choose your studies. Trust me.

Why?

I am currently enrolled in UP Diliman taking ONE subject in the residential mode--meaning I still go to a regular class with regular classmates; and taking THREE more in UP Open University--this time I do classes online.

AND

I am currently employed full time, working for Telus International. I also have just started a small online business selling websites to small businesses.

Studying is DYING literally. I mean, how could I even manage to go to school in the morning after work. And to tell you Math building in UP Diliman is situated at the worst place.. It's so far, even the moon is nearer.

Okay, enough with the exaggeration.

Another downside is that it costs you more to study while working--with UP's STFAP system at least.

I was bracketed STFAP B by the Office of the University Registrar (all UP units.) That means it costs P1000/unit to study; while without work, I would probably be in Bracket D (P300/unit) or E (P0/unit)--and that's way, way cheaper.

Here is my FORM 5 for a MATH11 subject this SY 2012-2013, second semester.

3k for a subject?
My FORM5: a single subject.
STFAP bracket B.

Although working gave me the opportunity to earn money, it all goes to my studies (I pay for my schooling.)  So, it's somehow useless if you ask. Unless you have rich parents to help you out, then that is great.

If you are planning to study and work at the same time, you better think about it really hard. It is not something pleasurable deep within. Seriously.

Now, like what I have mentioned, I'd rather study. It soothes me to sit down in a classroom listening to the professor. But I won't give up work.. I've got bills to pay, family to feed (lol.. not really) and a self to take care of.

Just a tip to all who are thinking about it.

Study first.

And you can work all the way after!

5 Benefits of Biking In The Morning

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - I went biking this morning.. Just want to share how awesome it feels to do it in the morning, when everyone's still asleep. Hahahaha.. So here is the story..

My bike is equipped with Shimano.
It's my off today! Friday. And I wanted to do something fun. I decided that I would go biking.. I haven't touched my mountain bike since I bought it last Christmas (it was a gift from an ex-coworker.. yes, she's that rich.)

I went around our subdivision (wow! just kidding though, it's not even gated.) So, again, I roamed around our area--Project 4--and discovered a lot of things. Biking, other than being beneficial to our health is also an awesome way to know yourself. Yes.. So true, you can forget yoga.

Here, I am listing down those other benefits I think biking has.

Suspension, baby.

1. Biking All By Yourself Helps You Reflect

..about life, of course. For every bumps, not of life but of what the humps cause, you'd definitely  realize "what the heck am I doing with my life?" Well, biking helped me think about my life's up and downs. Although, it's gets better day by day (hopefully,) there are still challenges that I am facing. But about yours, not really sure how to assist you. Just go biking, and you will see.

Sweet.
2. You Can Catch the Early Food

Saw a woman selling cariocas (kariyokas.. not sure how it is spelled) and decided to buy one. It's 7AM in the morning for heaven sake, don't expect me to buy something better. But it is indeed better than any other street food out there.  Honestly, I don't like cariocas. I like sugar but not these. But I was surprised that it tasted better in the morning! It's crunchy and hot. The funny part is when I was looking for a bananacue I actually asked her "Do you have barbecue?" Stupidity at its best.

So my point is, if I didn't go biking, I wouldn't appreciate this little wonder right here.

Brgy. Marilag Park and Hall.
3.  See Places You Haven't Seen In Years

This is the Brgy. Hall of Marilag. Here is one of the most popular parks in Project 4. It is well-preserved (gee, as if I am talking about natural resources) but it was like this since I was a kid. We used to come here biking with my papa and sisters and friends. Now, I was here, all alone with my mountain bike. If it wasn't for biking, I wouldn't be able to see it again. Nostalgic.

Self-service.

4. You Would Have Time For Yourself

Speaking of being alone, why feel bad about it? Alone but not lonely, that is great, isn't it? This part is probably a continuation of no. 1, but think about it, I was alone biking, and then I took this lonely photo, it's so perfect, I could die!

Time spent alone is time not spent wasting. Except maybe if you are masturbating, that is a completely different story. (LOL)

If only we could just go biking everyday without thinking about nothing else, I would be so happy. I would be in Batanes now.. if bikes could float.

So, the point is.. it gave myself a quality time.. reflection and stuff.

5. You Can Take Good Pictures

Look at how awesome those pictures are.. It could be talent but stop it you! Here's my favorite.

To finalize, I had a good time!

I bike in the gym, but biking on the road is way, way, way better!

And that ends the story. Happy Friday!

Trying Photography Using A Mobile Phone

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - I never owned a DLSR or DSLR whatever. So I don't have an idea on how that "reality freezer on 2D" works. (UPDATE: I now own a DSLR) Since I have a phone which takes decent pictures, I decided to try photography and came out with these wonders! I AM GOOD, RIGHT?!

Limelight: The Head Teacher

PASIG CITY, Philippines - What does it take to be influential? Aside from that killer smile and that overdone beauty queen wave, there’s got to be something those people have to be called influential. Everyone listens to what they say. Everyone pays attention to what they do. Everyone wants to share their message. From Oprah Winfrey to our very own Manny Pacquiao, many people in history have been influential to others. It seems like everyone has the potential to become significant. You don’t have to be as popular as Walt Disney to be an influential person. If you will just think about it, they must have become famous because of their influence! You can be influential in your own right. Want some proof? Meet Ms. Melarry Ribay.

Ms. Melarry Ribay, an English teacher, is perhaps the most influential person I’ve ever met in my entire career as an English tutor. It was my first day as a tutor in this academy in Ortigas Center. All of the employees were busy with their own tasks. Some teachers were teaching, of course, if not chitchatting. Some were surfing the internet. Some were filing documents. I then realized something was noticeably missing. Where’s the head teacher? As far I know, every educational institution has at least one person, other than the boss, who looks after everyone—a manager, a supervisor, or a head teacher. And in this place, why did it seem like everyone asked one another for help instead of going to the person in charge? Wasn’t there any? Since I was a newbie, I didn’t have the gut to ask. So I waited and waited. Until one day, a head teacher was finally introduced.

Her name is Melarry Ribay. She was not introduced as Ma’am Melarry or Professor Melarry (as she was once an English lecturer in Asian Summit College.) Rather, she was called Teacher Melarry because she opted to be called that way. I didn’t really ask more information about her because I was reluctant. But I heard good things. So good things, they sound too good to be true. Then I found her Friendster account. The facts were not lies at all! In her profile, I saw all her achievements. She had been there, done that, and yet she chose to be a head teacher in this humble academy.

Although most influential people get much interest for being different, you will soon be convinced that Miss Melarry, however straightforward she may be, is certainly an exceptional person. Her influence to the people she has been with is something noteworthy.

She was not so tall but her height was average for Filipina women. In a group of people swarming around a store that’s on sale, you wouldn’t notice she was there because she wasn’t tall. Her skin was bronze, if not dark, or most probably the typical kayumanggi with some yellowish accent. She had that Tyra Banks hairstyle; moreover, her thick bangs were covering her whole forehead. Her hair was dyed ash brown and highlighted blonde. It was long straight hair. Her earrings were sometimes enormous and weighty. I didn’t weigh them but I could see because her ears were sagged by their heaviness. She had this Nora Aunor-like mole on her face, right on the tip of her nose. If ever she’d get salvaged (may God forgive me for the thought), her face dilapidated, I would still recognize her as long as the mole is there, intact. I seldom caught her wearing her eyeglasses, and if ever I did, they would be those younger people wore. Rather, she was always wearing those light brown contact lenses. Her face didn’t show any signs of aging at all, even though she’s already in her late thirties.

Even though she’s a mother of three already, she still dressed very fashionably. She never let anxiety turn her into a manang. As a matter of fact, I observed her sported her high-heeled boots twice a week, except for a week long typhoon where she wore her stylish flip-flops. She might have looked younger and stylish, but the she still dressed professionally. Her fashion sense was just more for open-minded people: younger-looking yet presentable. She carried herself really well.

Melarry was an achiever. She had taught English in Indonesia, where she was very successful and well-liked. But being a mother and a wife had affected her so much that she felt the strong desire to go back to her family. The longing had become a necessity already, so she finally decided to go back to the Philippines. That’s the time she found her way back to the place I was working in. It was her 2nd time as a head teacher in this academy. The first was before she left for Indonesia. She was needed. She was sought.

Melarry was a very intelligent woman—a grammarian. She spoke like a professional and well-educated person. But outside the working space, she turned into a very different person. This was the other side of her. She was kalog, witty, and open-minded. She spoke the gay lingo and the street language. This person was enjoying both worlds all at the same time. We loved her because of this. The teachers under her supervision really looked up to her. She’s at the top but she’s still within reach. She is humble, funny, and entertaining—an all-in-one package. “John, kindly submit the evaluation paper of your student tomorrow. Submit it on time.” she told me one day while I was in front of my Korean student. The next day, during lunch break, she told me in Tagalog “John, if you have no time to do the evaluation paper, you can submit it tomorrow, just don’t tell anybody. Okay?”

Three qualities belonging to Melarry were her affectionate personality, pride, and her determination. She was faithful to her friends and family. She was well-loved by all the people around her. She was fair to everyone she encountered. Her word was her pledge. When she said she would do something, she always followed through with it. There’s no doubt in her experiences because she knew that she could handle anything life throws at her. During meetings, she was someone you would think harsh. She pointed out mistakes and corrected them rationally. She favoured no one. She wasn’t bias. But no one hated her. She’s someone nobody could hate, unless your intention is to replace her. She’s no doubt an extra-ordinary person. The teachers did what they must do without even complaining at all. We were influenced by her strong appeal and unending fortitude.

My Korean boss was everyone’s enemy. Even the Korean students themselves didn’t like her very much. One day, the boss summoned the head teacher, Melarry, to her office. She walked in a hurry. The boss demanded the teachers to finish the all the lessons in two days. That was impossible. Melarry, being intellectual, told my boss that it was an impossible task to accomplish in just two days. She was thinking about the teachers and the pressure attached to this kind of task. The lessons were twenty pages long and the students didn’t even have enough time to finish five pages in one day. But the boss was stubborn. Melarry, on the other hand, stood firm on her ground of the task’s impossibility. No matter how we turn the world upside down, the boss will always be the boss. So by the end of the day, the boss got what she wanted. Melarry then graciously gave her resignation letter that very day.

It was a very gloomy day for everyone who respected her. She was the finest we could ever have. She’s the company’s asset. The business was moulded with her hands. There’s no doubt we needed her, although she didn’t need the company at all. But she had been there. She had helped everyone to bring out the very in him.

Feeling quite shocked, the teachers who had been under her supervision decided to take her out on a “despedida” dinner date that day. She told us that she could not have reached that far without our unending support. After all that she had been through, she was very calm. She told us that hard work was supposed to be compensated and acknowledged. It was shame that all of her optimistic output had fallen on deaf ears. Though upset, she never asked us to do the same. She knew some of us were bread winners. She was never a bad influence. And that was the last time I've ever seen her again.

Teacher Melarry is now back in Indonesia, where she is very successful. She once told us a quote that we should not follow where the path may lead but go instead where there’s no path and leave a trail. She is now leaving a trail of herself. More than half of those teachers resigned after finishing the impossible two-day task. As for me, I stayed where I am, frequently remembering the day I met one of the most influential people I’ve ever met.
